E-Journals

FAQs

I can't access a particular e-journal title. How can I access it?

There are a variety of reasons why you may not be able to access an e-journal title. Work your way through the checklist below:

  1. If you are off campus, have you logged in?
Go to the off campus access page for help.
  2. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader on your PC to see .pdf file full text e-journals.
If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader you can download it here.

  3. Does the library subscribe to the e-journal you want?
E-journals subscribed to by the library have a record in the catalogue. Check this first.
  4. Does the library subscribe to the year, or part of the year, of the e-journal you want?
Check the start and end date of the journal subscription information.
  5. Are you able to access the e-journal via an alternative provider link?
E.g. Sociology of Health and Illness is available through three different providers.
E.g. Human Resource Planning is available through Academic Onefile and Business Source Premier.
  6. Is there an embargo on the particular e-journal volume you want to access?
E.g. Abacus is available via Business Source Premier to 1 year ago.
This means you will not be able to get access to this title through this provider for the current year.

  7. Is an error message displayed?
If an error message is displayed, contact the IRM Subscriptions & Licensing team.
  8. Are you asked for payment to display the full text, even though you have checked that the library subscribes to that particular e-journal. If so, contact the IRM Subscriptions & Licensing team.
E.g. Some providers such as IngentaConnect and ScienceDirect display this message more often than others.

How up-to-date is the e-journal information on the catalogue?

The e-journal catalogue records are updated monthly on around the 15th of each month. So the e-journal catalogue records will be less than a month out of date.

Academic Onefile / Computer Database is asking for a password.
Academic Onefile and Computer Database work using cookies which sit on each PC you use when accessing these databases. When the cookies expire you need to get a new cookie which you can get by accessing the database records (Academic Onefile ; Computer Database) rather than via the e-journal records, or by typing in the username and password found on the Thomson Databases username/password page.

Subscription Problems and Error Messages

You can report subscription problems and error messages via email to the IRM Subscriptions & Licensing team.

You will need to tell us the following information:

  • E-journal title
  • Provider e.g. IngentaConnect
  • E-journal year, volume, issue number and page numbers.
  • If you are reporting an error message you will need to give full details of the error message in your email.
  • Please type the e-journal title in the subject heading of your email.

E-Journal Service Level Agreements

  • We aim to investigate e-journal problems reported to us by email within 2 working days.
Please note: due to the complex nature of e-journals we cannot promise to have e-journal access re-established within this time frame, rather we will start to investigate the problem during this time.
  • We respond to email rather than telephone queries. Full details of problems should be submitted (see Subscription Problems section above).
